About Us
What we do at The Children's Aid Society of the County of Bruce
Intake Services & Family Services
We investigate complaints of children being abused and neglected as defined
by the Child and Family Services Act of the Province of Ontario. We assess
family and individual functioning; we provide therapeutic intervention,
including short-term treatment to children and families; we protect children
through bringing them into foster care and through Orders of the local
family court.
Foster Care
Temporary placement of children to provide parental relief if no other
family services are available; short and long term placement of children
in foster homes and group homes, usually as a result of a Court Order
for the protection of the children; assessment, counselling and preparation
for independent living; referral for psychological, psychiatric, educational
and other professional services.
Adoption Services
We provide permanent homes for children through adoption and we also
provide placement for children not legally adoptable but who require long-term
care and the security of a permanent home.
Volunteer Services
A program to assist children
and families in a variety of ways including transportation to visits with
parents, medical appointments etc.; Supervised Access and Case Aid Work.
Volunteers provide invaluable support to agency workers, families and
foster families.
Other Community Services:
The Grey Bruce Supervised Access Program
This program shares space and facilities in the CAS building. The Grey
Bruce Supervised Access Programs provides:
a) A safe, neutral and child focused setting for on-site visits and
exchanges.
b) Group visitation for children and families, in a comfortable, relaxed
setting where toys, crafts and sports equipment are available.
c) Professionally trained staff with appropriate intervention skills
(First Aid, CPR, NVCI), who are sensitive to the needs of children.
d) Factual, clear and concise observation reports, which are used for
the courts and are available to parents.
Our Community Partners
The CAS also partners with other community organizations:
Adult Protective Services
The CAS is also responsible for service delivery for this program.
It serves a client population, which includes any developmentally handicapped
person, 18 years of age or over, living in, or preparing to live in,
the Grey/Bruce community. The Development Services Act of Ontario defines
a developmental handicap as "a condition of mental impairment present,
or occurring, during a person's formative years, that is associated
with limitations in adaptive behaviour.
The Service operates within the mandate and the policy and guidelines
set down by the Community Services Developmental Branch of the Ministry
of Community and Social Services, all of which aim to enable developmentally
handicapped adults living in a community setting to lead lives as near
to normal and as independent as possible.
Because this program does not possess the kind of legal authority vested
in agencies such as CAS, this service is delivered through the medium
of a voluntary relationship with the client. Rather than advocating
the establishment of a separate network of supports aiming specifically
at the community's developmentally handicapped, it is the objective
of this program to ensure that the variety of generic resources used
by the general population are accessible to the developmentally handicapped
and appropriate to their needs. The approach of the Adult Protective
Services Worker is therefore generic in nature, utilizing community
based specialized services for the developmentally handicapped, only
when generic services are unavailable or inappropriate.
