Press Release

Summer Camp Funds Needed

The Bruce Children are Special Foundation is working hard to raise funds for this year’s Summer Camp program.

This past April the Bruce Children are Special Foundation hosted an Easter Ham and Pepperette Drive, selling two sizes of hams for Easter from Wayne Batte’s Custom Butchering and pepperettes from Heidleburg Foods.

The Easter Ham and Pepprette fundraiser lead straight into the Yard Sale & BBQ which was held on the Saturday of the long weekend in May. “It was such a beautiful day,” says Cherie Borho, Administrator to the Bruce Children are Special Foundation. “We couldn’t have asked for nicer weather.”

About $1,500 was raised between the two fundraisers. But this comes no where near the $22,000 budget that is being spent on Summer Camp this year. In 2010, the foundation spent $20,000 to send 61 children to camp. Due to the increase in cost for summer camps, the Bruce Children are Special Foundation increased their budget to $22,000.

“We are still in need of Summer Camp funding, and really need the community’s support” says Borho. “No matter how small or large of donation, it is always appreciated. Every dollar counts and it makes a difference to a child in the community.”

Children can really benefit from a summer camp experience. It helps encourage their interests, boost self esteem and increase their social skills. This can be especially important to those children most vulnerable.

In efforts to raise more funds for Summer Camp, this coming August the Bruce Children are Special Foundation will also sell Little Casers Pizza Kits to help raise more funds.

If you wish to make a donation towards Summer Camp, donations can still be made. Call 1-888-807-7773 ext 262 or make a donation online at canadahelps.org.

Easter Ham and Pepperette Fundraiser

Easter is quickly approaching and that means it’s time, once again, for the annual Easter Ham Drive and Pepperette Fundraiser at the Bruce Children are Special Foundation.

“There are a few changes to this year’s fundraiser,” says Cherie Borho, Administrator to the Bruce Children are Special Foundation. “This year the hams will be from a new, local, supplier. But not to worry for all those pepperette fans, they have not changed.”

Hams will be from Wayne Batte’s Custom Butchering and sold at $12 for a 3lb ham and $23 for a 6lb ham. Pepperettes will be from Heidelberg Foods and available in three flavours: mild, hot and extra hot. A 50 pack will cost $15 and a 20 pack will cost $8.

All proceeds go towards the Summer Camp program. This year the goal is to raise $22,000 for summer camp registration.

The deadline for placing orders is the morning of Monday March 21. The delivery date is the afternoon of Monday April 11, at The Children’s Aid Society of the County of Bruce in Walkerton.

Another Successful Christmas

Thanks to the support of the community, the Bruce Children are Special Foundation had another successful Christmas this past year.

Each year, the foundation coordinates two Christmas programs: Christmas Hampers and Adopt-A-Family. About 325 children recieved a hamper, 32 families were adopted. A grand total of 409 children recieved something under the tree this year.

"None of this would have been possible without the help of people in our community," says Cherie Borho, Administrator to the Bruce Children are Special Foundation. "We are so lucky to have your support, thank you so much for giving a child a hand up this past Christmas."

It is still possible to make a late Christmas donation to help with the cost of the hamper program. It is a costly program, costing over $15,000. Any help is very much appreciated. Donations can be made by cheque, or through canadahelps.org. Feel free to call 1-888-807-7773 ext 262 for more information, or visit the website at www.brucecas.ca/foundation.

Bruce Children are Special Foundation Wins Second Place

Recently, the Bruce Children are Special Foundation was nominated one of the top ten charities in Canada by Pepsi Refresh and Pizza Delight Grant Program. The foundation was the only charity in Ontario who was nominated. The winner was determined by fans voting on Facebook for their favourite charity and the charity with the most votes recieved $5,000.

The Bruce Children are Special Foundation came in second with over 2000 votes. The winner was the Restigouche County Volunteer Action Association Inc., from New Brunswick, earning over 5000 votes.

Thanks to the Walkerton Pizza Delight, the Bruce Children are Special Foundation will not walk away empty handed. A $1,000 grant will be issued to the foundation early 2011.

"It's ok we didn't win," says Cherie Borho, Administrator to the Bruce Children are Special Foundation. "We are just so happy to have been nominated. It is great to know that we are making a difference in our community."

The foundation would like to send a thank you out to everyone who spent their time voting, it was much appreciated.
